Some of Spanish science’s most important contributions to universal knowledge come from the explorations Spanish natural scientists carried out in South America during the sixteenth century in search of natural products that could be used in medicine, pharmacy, trade, etc. By the eighteenth century, the number and diversity of scientific expeditions was enormous, embracing everything from marine and hydrographical explorations to the identification of new vegetable and animal species that were announced to European science, coinciding with the birth of modern natural history.
