Athens, the Whiteness of the Goddess

The death of Pericles in the year 429 BC marks the end of a generation, of a “century” that the Athenians devoted to consecrating their own glory and that of their Goddess, Athena. Eager to reaffirm their Olympic status after the Persians’ destruction of the Acropolis, they built amazing statues and monuments in her honour, works that immediately went on to become “classics”, exemplary for Greeks and Romans.
 

Following in the footsteps of the sculptor Polykleitos of Argos, when in 428 BC he left Athens fleeing from the Plague and the Peloponnesian War, Miguel Ángel Elvira presents a walk back in time through Classical Athens…
