Ravenna: Space and Time of a City between East and West

2/19/2015

Of Etruscan origin, Ravenna is the result of a meeting between East and West from the fifth to the eighth centuries, when the city was the capital of the Western Roman Empire, the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths and the Byzantine Exarchate, respectively. Lauro Olmo describes this period of building and expansion, coinciding with the transition from the Ancient Era to the Middle Ages, which has left us a landscape laden with religious, palatial and commercial buildings defined by the Oriental vitality of the urban influence of Constantinople.
