Liszt in Spain (1844-1845)

Mariano Soriano Fuertes: Vals fúnebre. Franz Liszt: Feuille Morte. Élégie d'après Mariano Soriano S. 428

When Liszt arrived in Córdoba in 1844, a glittering retinue led by the composer and musicologist Mariano Soriano Fuertes was there to welcome him. Liszt improvised a “very beautiful and brilliant fantasia” based on a waltz by Soriano at the city’s Real Círculo de la Amistad, Liceo Artístico y Literario and published his Feuille Morte. Élégie d’après Mariano Soriano S 428 one year later in Paris. For years, specialists unsuccessfully tried to discover the work on which this piece was based. But it was only recently that a Wals fúnebre Soriano Fuertes composed after the death of Bellini was located, the piece Liszt used to compose his Feuille Morte. Sergei Yerokhin performs both works in this concert.
