Liszt in Spain (1844-1845)

Francisco Salas: Los toros del Puerto, de Francisco Salas. Franz Liszt: Romancero Espagnol S 695c

Franz Liszt planned to publish his Romancero Espagnol in 1847 with a dedicatory to Queen Isabella II. However, the work was never published and remained forgotten until it was discovered and edited by Leslie Howard, who completed the original manuscript and premiered the work in Spain during this concert. The Romancero begins with a quote from the song Los toros del Puerto by Francisco Salas, which was also performed during this concert as a foretaste of the variations that Liszt would subsequently present during some of his peninsula recitals.
