Livingstone: the Missionary who became an Explorer

11/19/2015

For the writer and traveller Javier Reverte, the Briton David Livingstone (1813-1873) pertains to the genre of explorers who not only admired the mountains but wondered what was behind them. Livingstone studied Theology and from a very age knew his vocation was to be a missionary. This led him to go on various expeditions to Africa, the first two with an evangelising mission –in which he discovered “Victoria Falls”– , a third for exploration and a fourth in search of the mysterious source of the Nile. On the latter, various circumstances led him to end up defenceless on the banks of Lake Tanganyika, where he was found by the journalist Henry Stanley, who coined the famous phrase “Doctor Livingstone, I suppose…”.
