The passions of the soul: Wonder

Works by A. Corelli & H. I. Biber

10/30/2015 - 10/31/2015

Wonder, according to Descartes, is a primary passion that arises upon observing something strange, extraordinary, unexpected or surprising. The virtuosic repertory of the Baroque era, loaded with stravaganza, is one of the vehicles most suited to arousing this indescribable wonder in the spectator. Two of the most striking examples of this are Corelli’s Sonatas Op. 5 (a model of virtuosity throughout the eighteenth century) and Biber’s Rosary Sonatas (a collection whose circulation was limited during his time and which combine equal doses of sacred and secular elements).
