“Fiction invented the human being”

1/26/2016

The author and academic José María Merino describes the treatment of the narrative elements fundamental to his creative process –behaviours, settings and simultaneous worlds– and points out his influences and prevailing themes, from the legends, cinema or stories of his childhood, to the myths of the loss of Eden, the search for treasure and life as a dream or his trips to America. For the narrator, human existence consists of the use of language to create fiction, a task consisting of both “the collective adventure” of imagining them and the “individual adventure” of writing these fictional stories.
