Chopin was a point of reference for the composers of the European periphery at the beginning of the twentieth century. This was the case with Enrique Granados, who summarised the legacy of the Romantic salon in his works with the search for a national essence based on historical musics. And with Federico Mompou, who responded to Chopin’s example both directly and through Fauré and Debussy.
Fryderyk Chopin had a profound knowledge of Bach’s works, to the point that, during the winter he spent in Majorca, he took a copy of The Well-Tempered Clavier with him. The connections between Bach’s and Chopin’s works become apparent in the repertory performed by Josep Colom, who links these works to improvisations that accentuate their ties.
