Variaciones sobre "Les Folies d'Espagne" de Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach

11/2/2013 - 11/9/2013

Musicology has not paid enough attention to the importance of repetition (varied or not) in music. This resource forms the basis of the innumerable variations composed on the theme of the “folía”, which attracted the attention of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Two different performances of his 12 Variations on “Les Folies d’Espagne” (1778), whose title refers to the Iberian (in reality Portuguese) origin of this dance, are given in this video, allowing the richness of the harpsichord’s timbres and dynamic intensity to be compared with the clarity of pianistic articulation.
