Tim BlanningThe Protestant Reformation and early modern English Culture (1550-1800)
This lecture was one of the series of lectures entitled "Empire and Art" which accompanies the exhibition "Treasure Island - British Art from Holbein to Hockney". The Reformation had a major impact on all aspects of English culture. Tim Blanning had focused on some of them, like the effects of the expropriation of so much church property, especially the transfer of huge amounts of land to the nobility and gentry. Special attention has been made on the English enthusiasm for portraiture, the building of country houses, the impact on the universities and changes in music. A section has been devoted to the surge of English nationalism which found expression in all cultural media, most notably in painting and drama.
